Feature: The Value of Alpha

The Value Circle (TVC) understands that several visitors to our site are curious about the performance of the picks of our members. Hence, we have decided to provide this update on how the two companies featured as sample posts on our site has performed. This is also an opportune time to showcase the discussions of our TVC members.

Note that whilst the return figures below are for time periods of less than one year, TVC actually promotes investment with a longer time horizon. Typically, members are encouraged to source for securities which are fundamentally sound and would outperform the market over a 3 to 5 year time horizon. However, we recognize that near term returns could be very outstanding if any of the driver events identified occurs.

As with praise you see on the back of any book, there is a tendency to indulge in selection bias. Mindful of the foregoing, we had aimed to be fair in presenting the selection of discussions below. However, with global market conditions buoyant globally, most of the securities discussed in the community have correspondingly benefited from the rising tide. As a result, we recommend that attention be focused on the out-performance premium (i.e., alpha) of the picks instead.

It is hoped that the samples below serve to illustrate the quality of the discussions between a closely knit community of value investors in Asia. There are other examples discussed by members which have delivered equally stunning returns. There are also many more which members feel remain under-valued and are awaiting re-rating.
